The EXP Ambassador Program is a volunteer opportunity for current and former Exploratory Studies (EXP) students to get involved as student leaders on campus. Ambassadors play a vital role in helping new, incoming, and current students navigate their own exploration journeys—sharing insights from their experiences with the exploration process, ICT (Intercollegiate Transfer), and advising at Illinois.
What EXP Ambassadors Do
EXP Ambassadors represent Exploratory Studies through a variety of engagement opportunities, including:
- Supporting EXP events, workshops, and campus-wide initiatives
- Assisting with EXP 101 classes and new student programming
- Contributing to student panels, outreach events, and workgroups
- Building connections across campus with partners, peers, and staff
Ambassadors bring enthusiasm, leadership, and empathy to every interaction—helping fellow students feel supported as they explore their academic and career interests.
Time Commitment
The Ambassador Program is designed to be flexible and rewarding.
- New Ambassadors complete approximately 2 hours of training and at least 2 hours of involvement in their first semester.
- Returning Ambassadors complete at least 2 hours of involvement per semester to stay active in the program.
Ambassadors can choose how to get involved—whether it’s through events, classroom visits, social media projects, or peer mentoring.

Eligibility Criteria
To join the EXP Ambassador Program, students must:
- Be currently enrolled at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
- Be in good academic standing
- Be a current or former Exploratory Studies student (previously the Division of General Studies)

Program History
Launched in 2023, the EXP Ambassador Program has grown leaps and bounds since its start. What began as a small group of volunteers has expanded into a thriving community of 75 active Ambassadors (and counting!). We’re proud of our Ambassadors’ commitment to helping students find their path and to shaping the future of Exploratory Studies at Illinois.
